Gratitude in Action: A Simple Habit to Transform Your Day
Did you know you can increase your happiness by up to 25%? Think about that – 25% more joy in your life, simply by shifting your perspective. It’s like discovering a superpower you’ve always had but never used!
Today we’re talking about how one simple habit – gratitude – can transform your day, your mindset, and even your relationships.
So, why does gratitude matter?
Here’s the science: Studies have shown that gratitude improves mental health, reduces stress, and strengthens relationships. It even helps you sleep better. When you focus on the good in your life, you train your brain to see more of it. It’s like switching on a flashlight in a dark room.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: Frank, this isn’t new and it isn’t rocket science. Chances are, you’ve heard something like this before. But what you may not always realize, is just how often we let fear and anger mess things up. We focus on what’s wrong. But I ask you… every day at your credit union, is that what you want to focus on? What’s wrong? Of course not.
There is something called the law of familiarity. This means that the more we see or experience something, the more we tend to take it for granted. So… stop, feel and appreciate what’s around you. All you need is a simple Gratitude Anchor.
What’s a Gratitude Anchor? It’s when you attach a moment of gratitude to something you already do every day. As you log into your workstation, take a moment to appreciate having a secure job at the credit union and the opportunity to help members. When you greet the first member of the day, mentally thank them for trusting the credit union with their financial needs. When you log off for the day, reflect on one positive interaction or achievement that made the day worthwhile.
Want an even simpler Gratitude Anchor? What do you think about when you brush your teeth or start your car. Uses these as anchors for taking the time to reflect what matters most in your life.
Think of it this way: You’re weaving gratitude into your daily routine, one small thread at a time. Over days and weeks, those threads become a tapestry of positivity and perspective. And trust me, it’s contagious. When you’re more grateful, the people around you feel it, too.
Here’s my challenge to you: For the next seven days, try a Gratitude Anchor. Pick one everyday moment – like your morning coffee – and pause to reflect on one thing you’re thankful for. Notice how your perspective shifts. See how those small moments of appreciation start to brighten your day. And then, share your experience. Gratitude grows when it’s shared.
Thank you for taking this time to focus on something so simple, yet so powerful. Gratitude starts with just one moment, one thought, one habit. And as always, remember... Ideas spark changes; actions ignite it.
