Are you a Follower or a Trailblazer in Banking

Are You a Follower or a Trailblazer?

Have you ever wondered what sets a follower apart from a trailblazer?

In the world of banking, especially on the front lines of a credit union, the difference can define your career. But here's the thing: you don't need a fancy title to be a leader. You just need to be regarded as such by those around you.

When your members see you as a leader, they trust you more. And when your peers see you as a leader, they look up to you. That makes the idea of leadership a bit more palatable, doesn't it?

Leadership starts with how others see you. You might think, "I’m just a teller" or "I'm just in member services," but in the eyes of your members and peers, you can be so much more.

Imagine this: a member walks in, unsure about a new product or service. They look to you for guidance. If you confidently provide them the information they need, you’re leading. You’re setting the path. And it’s the same with your colleagues. When you share your knowledge or support them in tasks, you’re taking the lead.

Think of it like this: every interaction you have is an opportunity to lead. When you solve a problem, offer a solution, or simply listen to a member’s concerns, you're showing leadership qualities.

So, how do you become a leader? Well, here are some five actionable steps:

    1. Know the Industry: Stay informed about the latest trends in banking and financial services. The more you know, the more you can help others. Read industry blogs, attend webinars, and participate in training sessions. Knowledge is power, and in this case, it’s also your ticket to becoming a trusted advisor.
    1. Stay Ahead of Trends: What’s next in banking? Mobile banking, AI, personalized financial advice. Keep an eye on emerging trends. Being the go-to person for what's new and what's next makes you a trailblazer. For example, if you know all there is to know about your digital wallet, you can guide your members through the benefits and setup process, showing that you’re ahead of the curve.
    1. Build a Supportive Member Base: Your members can be your greatest advocates. Providing exceptional service, and listening to their needs, and you’ll see their support you in return. Their feedback can give you a boost in your career. When members feel valued and understood, they are more likely to stay loyal and even recommend you to others.
    1. Improve Public Speaking Skills: Whether it’s a team or a member presentation, being able to speak clearly and confidently is crucial. Join a public speaking club, practice with your colleagues, or even take online courses. The better you can communicate, the more you’ll be seen as a leader. Start small – maybe a brief presentation to your team and gradually build up your confidence.
    1. Anticipate the Needs and Knowledge Gaps: Think about what your members don’t know but need to. Provide that information proactively. This foresight shows leadership.

To wrap things up, remember that being a leader isn't about the title you hold but the perception you create. So, are you ready to be a trailblazer at your credit union? The choice is yours.
