Perception Power: Influencing How You’re Seen
In the confines of your credit union, have you ever felt your colleagues have you pegged all wrong? If we’re being honest with ourselves, it can be hard to put on a good face for the members when we don’t feel seen or heard by our own team.
Ultimately, you may want to be more influential at work. Not in the sense of an influencer or of American socialite Kylie Jenner, but you want to strategically shape the perceptions others have of you, paving the way for professional advancement and success.
If this is your desire, here are five ways you can shape how others see you:
- Recognize Your Own Nonverbal Cues – Before you even say a word, your body is already speaking volumes. Your posture, facial expression and gestures are your personal billboard broadcasting your vibe to coworkers and to members.
Tidbit: Ever heard the saying “eyes are the windows to the soul”? They’re also pretty good at spilling the tea. Avoiding eye contact screams, “I’d rather be elsewhere” whereas maintaining eye contact says, “Hey, I’m here, I’m engaged, and I’m listening.”
- Hone Your Communication Skills – It’s not just about what you say, it’s how you say it. Listen actively, speak clearly, and express yourself with vigor. Be careful resorting to texting or email, where tone can be misread. Every opportunity to speak is a chance to improve, refine, and become a master communicator. Get out from behind the screens and practice it daily!
Tidbit: Always consider your audience. You should tailor your message to their preference, ensuring it resonates on a deeper level.
- You Are What You Wear – Yes, we form impressions quickly, and clothing is a big part of that. What you wear can also influence how you see yourself. This doesn’t mean you need to invest in high-end, designer brands, but rather “dress the part.” It can give you the perfect blend of confidence, elegance, or attitude.
Tidbit: Striking the perfect balance between form and function is important, but at the end of the day, what truly matters is caring. The essence lies within you – your values, aspirations, and ambitions – and clothing is a tool to accomplish your mission.
- Be Visible and Proactive – Don’t wait for opportunity to knock. Be proactive in seeking out new challenges, volunteering for projects, and taking on leadership roles. Make yourself visible within your organization by consistently delivering high-quality work and actively participating in meetings and discussions.
Tidbit: This is not about being impulsive or assertive, or being in control and imposing one’s will on others. It’s all about having responsibility and owning it!
- Cultivate Advocates– In addition to contributing positively to your team, take the time to get to know your colleagues on a personal level. Listen to their concerns, provide guidance when appropriate, and celebrate their successes. Showing appreciation builds goodwill and strengthens relationships.
Tidbit: Advocacy is a two-way street. Building genuine relationships on mutual respect, trust, and support means promoting the achievements of others, delegating or recommending them for tasks and projects, and fostering a culture of collaboration.
