Does Your Staff Know Why They Matter? | Credit Union Training by YMC

Recently, I had the privilege of sitting down with the new CEO of a credit union that had just come through a tough transition. The previous leader left behind more than just outdated policies. She left emotional baggage and a fractured team.

The new CEO stepped in two years ago with vibrancy and energy, eager to heal and rebuild. And she’s done exactly that. The staff, many of them young and new to the credit union world, are finally breathing again. There’s a fresh sense of optimism – a renewed pulse in the culture.

But in our conversation, this CEO shared something insightful: while she’s reignited the culture, she’s unsure if her team feels purposeful. Are their jobs meaningful, or just enjoyable?

She’s not alone. Many credit union leaders find themselves here. They reignite the team spirit… and then stop. Not intentionally, but because the “vibe” feels better. Yet, the real work – defining purpose, aligning values, creating consistent direction – remains unfinished.

Staff enjoy the environment, yes. But do they understand why they exist? Do they know the lifeblood of the credit union is its members? And are they equipped to serve with clarity, consistency, and conviction?
